A funny thing happened on the way to the school board meeting... - TopicsExpress

A funny thing happened on the way to the school board meeting... Actually it happened after the meeting started. It was shortly after 9/11. The entire country was still in shock, (as was most of the world). The president of the school board asked if it would be okay to say a prayer for the victims and their families before the meeting started. I was the only reporter there that evening; the president looked at me as if looking for approval. Our eyes made contact. I also felt all other eyes followed hers and fell upon me. It was as if she wanted clearance to pray in a public place. I simply nodded my head indicating, Okay. I have no problem with it. What bothered me was that she felt she had to ask permission to pray. What bothered me more as a reporter, was what would have happened had I shook my head no; as if I would have made major discord in our community because I had the power. The power to say This is right, that is wrong! You believe in this! I believe in that! There has been a great misunderstanding in peoples interpretation between the Constitutions separation between church and state. It gets a little complicated, and you have to re-read the Constitution to understand it. Simply put, the Constitution does not endorse, nor ban any religion. It does not ban prayer anywhere. Keep the faith, baby! Mike
