A garden manager is much like a weaver who envisions the way the earthiness of the warp supports the colors of the weft and who can see in its entirety, the resulting tapestry before it even begins to take shape. The person who holds that vision when knots and tangles frustrate. A garden manager works with the lives of people, plants, soil and the entire surrounding environment to facilitate the creation of one amazing and ongoing living tapestry called community. This community is true because it leaves out nothing. It’s our hope that communities across the country will see the job of a skilled garden manager as some of the most important work it can support -- a position that can have a profound effect on everything from blood pressure to civil discourse. Every year we speak to dozens of young people who would love to know this is so – that they could train hard and grow in wisdom in order to serve a community with their very lives. It’s a challenging position where you are called on to be an educator, therapist, nurturer, mentor, student, host, midwife, artist, cheerleader, confidant, doctor and then some. But that’s the thrill of it. No day is ever the same and your ‘office’ is a riot of color and birdsong and gaggles of people.
