A good news story. A big brand liked a picture I did at an event and wanted to run it. Id been paid for the event work, so had a chat with the subject and my client about what to do. I base my approach on objectives: whose objectives are being met by the request? - here, definitely at least some of it meeting the objectives of the big brand. If they were running a feature on the event itself, fine; but this is subsidiary use, so needs licensing. How to be fair? What I do here is ask for a nominal licence fee. (Small double figures. Its symbolic as much as anything - they have to create a supplier account and do the processing - emphasising to them that stuff with value has, well, value.) I put this into a notional pot that helps me do the pro bono coverage I do for non-profits and other good causes (pretty much something every week). Having first said they had no budget, theyve now agreed to the terms, and all is good. Lesson: dont give stuff away for free, but dont take the piss - theres usually a fair route ahead if you keep calm, and a close eye on whos getting value where.
