A great crowd turned out at New Ross rugby club for the Leinster league under 15 semi-final clash between the home side and the north County Offaly side Edenderry. New Ross couldn’t have asked for a better start to the game when Morgan Purcell was released wide after some expert passing from Barry Roche, set him on his way to score down the wing while being pursued by the Edenderry backline. Soon after the restart and again with sheer determination and a solid game plan, New Ross once again found themselves close to the Edenderry try-line. Forwards play from Liam Whelan, Calum Crean, Adam Fitzgerald and Liam Furness set up a solid ruck and Scrumhalf Zach Cullen picked from the back and jinked between two Edenderry forwards to score a lovely try and put the home side 10 – 0 up. New Ross’s tempo upped and it wasn’t long before Peter Lawlor took on the ball after Diarmuid Kehoe let him loose with a great pass. Peter ripped through the Edenderry backline with blistering pace and a beautiful inside step to score near the Edenderry posts. The game was put out of reach of Edendrry in the second half with two more flying trys from Morgan Purcell and another well-deserved try from Peter Lawlor. Barry Roche had an excellent game as outhalf once again and slotted four out of six conversions over the bar. Edenderry scored a consolation penalty and then a try late in the second half to bring the full time score to New Ross 38 Edenderry 8. Individuality had no place in the game-plan for New Ross and they dominated from the start through solid tackling, rucking, scrumming and quick reforming, in essence a team that played as a team. Coach Ger Monaghan set out New Ross’s stall at the start of the game when he said “I want to see you give these lads nothing only their sandwiches on their way home” and these young guys delivered. A Leinster league final against Enniscorthy was today’s prize for New Ross and by the way they are playing at the moment, this is a prize that they are more than capable of taking home.
