Our client, a major auction house, has an exciting opportunity for a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Director – 20th Century Fine & Decorative Arts to be based in either their Manhattan or LA office. The appropriate candidate will have knowledge and appraisal experience and will be a subject matter expert in this category. In this role, you will be responsible for fostering business getting for sales in the US related to 20th Century Fine & Decorative Arts. This role works in concert with the international 20th Century team and other Heads of Department to help foster the growth of New York or LA auction and private sales for our client. In addition, you will assist in instituting systems to streamline the expertise, marketing and catalogue production processes as well as ensure that the departmental operations are in good order. Key responsibilities will include: • Build and implement a strategy to grow company market share in the 20th Century Fine and Decorative Arts with the US management team and the international 20th Century Fine & Decorative Arts department. • Engage and foster a larger audience of potential fine art consignors throughout the Americas and in concert with other Specialists and Senior Specialists across the Fine Arts and beyond. • Develop potential Modern/20th Century Art consignors and buyers in North and South America and Asia alongside the respective regional offices • Oversee and streamline catalogue production related to the New York 20th Century Fine & Decorative Arts • Ensure that expertise and legal issues related to department auctions and all sale content are addressed in a timely manner and to liaise with the Head of Sales, COO, or CEO on such matters. • Contribute to the sale calendar as a member of the New York team of auctioneers * (*upon completion of New York Department of Consumer Affairs auctioneering license) • Serve as an ambassador for organization at various speaking engagements and presentations related to auctions and 20th Century Fine & Decorative Arts, including benefit auctions where required • Endeavour to write articles for appropriate magazines and newspapers focused on our organization and this sale category • Grow relationships with trustee boards in the United States, in cooperation with the Museum Services team, to develop consignments from deaccessioning programs and as a gateway to new networks of active collectors • Drive a dedicated private sales program, in cooperation with the US and European departments, to grow a book of vendors and buyers in this important sector • Target clients, both buy and sell side, domestically, through presale exhibitions and visits arranged in cooperation with the local offices • Solicit property from dealers or private collectors, including appraising items at in-house appointments, walk-ins, estate, insurance appraisals or off-site clinics. Perform written insurance and estate appraisals • Negotiate estimated values, fees, reserves, sellers’ commissions, and photography charges for contracts or consignments • Manage process to ensure that all major past buyers and collectors are aware of upcoming sales; have received catalogues, and that works of particular interest for them are noted • Meet acquisition, budgetary and marketing goals • Work with Regional Representatives throughout US • Supervise and maintain professional internal relationships with co-workers To be successful in this role, you will have: • 10+ years experience in the specialty field and/or in the auction industry • Relationships with established dealers and collectors in the field • Strong written and verbal communication, and networking skills • Detail-oriented, well-organized manager • Ability to prioritize and meet strict scheduled deadlines • Computer proficient, and able to work within our business enterprise software • Ability to travel 45% of the time • Ability to work flex hours, including evenings and weekends as needed This position provides a competitive base salary plus a bonus opportunity.
