A little Geek humor: It is a well-known fact that the term debugging came about because in the early days of the IBM mainframe machines, one of the programs went awry and they discovered a moth in the machine that was gumming up the works. Therefore, programming errors came to be called “bugs” and the correction of errors “debugging.” My cell phone quit working the other day and I opened the back to discover a long hair in the works. Although I don’t think the hair was causing the problem, I wondered if they had discovered a hair instead of a bug if they would have called errors “hairs” and the process of correcting them “dehairing” or perhaps even giving the program a shave or haircut. When I mentioned this to my class, it bombed. I don’t do well with jokes.
