A little over 26 1/2 years ago, in February of 1988, I made a trip with Don Cramer that changed my life. On a snowy day that required chains on our car to make it up Seven Mountains, we traveled to the Chambers Building to do our special admit auditions for the Penn State Blue Band. Up to that point in my life, I was a pretty good player, but I had a problem with auditions. I choked. I just couldnt do it. I never once made any type of festival band, because even if I knew the music cold, I just couldnt prove it in the audition room. That February morning, I met Dr. O. Richard Bundy, and had what is probably the only quality audition of my life. There may have been others, but THAT one is the one that counted, because it gave me the chance to be part of an organization that changed and has shaped my life. I made lifelong friendships, learned valuable lessons, and met the woman who eventually became my wife. I owe no small debt of gratitude to Dr. Bundy, who put me at ease that day and allowed me play the way that I knew I could, which opened that very important door in my life. As hundreds (thousands?) of other Blue Banders can attest, Dr. Bundys ability to convey life lessons through his teaching is both subtle and impressive. Of the 2 pieces of advice that I pass along most often in my life, one is from him: Take care of the little things, and the big things will work themselves out. So, Im going to finish typing, finish packing the car, and make the familiar trip up 322. The lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I watch Dr. Bundy conduct the Alma Mater one last time as Director of Bands will be from GRATITUDE, and not sadness. #ThanksDrBundy, for everything. Best of luck, health, and happiness to you and Mrs. Bundy. See you at Homecoming!
