A little personal about spraying... Last week I was informed that our shelter was going to pts one of our cats. Usually this shelter does not pts unless for strict medical reason, meaning the cat is already dying. Now this cat, who is a wonderful panther, sprays everything at the shelter. There’s nothing medically wrong with him. So when I found out, I asked why on earth they would pts a gorgeous cat like that. They told me that he would not be adoptable cause of the spraying. So here’s a little education (which I also told the shelter) for everyone with a spraying cat. Spraying in cats is pure communication. Un-speutered cats spray to communicate seksual status, status in a territory, health, etc. Speutered cats usually don’t spray. When they do, there can be medical reasons, like a very bad speuter job (one testicle left in the body or some ovarian cells that remained and go amok) or hyper thyroid problems. But many times the spraying is simply caused cause the cat feels threatened, usually by other cats. You would not kill a soul for feeling threatened or being very, very afraid, would you?? In this case the cat was very afraid of other cats. Simply a matter of bad socialization to other cats. As soon as this cat will be adopted to a home with no other fluffy inhabitants, he will stop spraying. Luckily, they decided to not kill the cat after all. Many times we people get desperate and do rash things cause we don’t have the knowledge!
