A lot have asked me recently on the ruling on holding candlelight vigil, wearing black straps or standing a moment of salience as part of showing their sorrow and grief. At first, we all sympathize with the families who have encountered such a calamity and we condemn this barbaric attack unconditionally. Never the less, we must follow the teachings of our religion and abide by it under all circumstances. Such acts of expressing our condolences are prohibited in Islam. The Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam had said: whoever imitates a people, he is one of them. These people have their own culture and rituals. As Muslims, we too have our own culture and rituals. We must not imitate them and must preserve our identity and be proud of it. The same ruling applies to celebrating or greeting them on Christmas. We can’t send them gifts or participate in any of their celebrations. Sending them a post card or greeting them back is also not permissible. They have their religion and we have ours! We respect others and we understand but they too must understand that we have lines we can’t cross.
