A lot of hoohar about the new English literature syllabus omitting American books. Now Im a real fan of Gove and think hes the best Education minister in my living memory, but if this is true its a real backward step. I hated being forcefed Shakespeare and it put me off. That canon of so-called English classics still leaves me cold. Dickens, Austen blah blah blah. Not my thing. But saying that I gave up on To Kill A Mockingbird halfway through because it did nothing for me! Id probably design an English literature course around Henry Miller and Charles Bukowski and get savaged by outraged parents!
