In MMA there is NO 8 count like in boxing or kickboxing. If a fighter is knocked down or knocked out the referee does not count. The referee will decide to stop the fight or continue if the fighter who is knocked down still is able to defend himself. In this case McCarthy was knocked down and was hanging in the ropes without defending himself. So it was a good decision of the referee.
