A lot of you know we had a tragedy just downstream of the Siloam - TopicsExpress

A lot of you know we had a tragedy just downstream of the Siloam Springs Whitewater and Rec at Fishers Ford Whitewater Park on Tuesday the 17th of June. Sixteen year old Evan Thomas, drowned while playing with friends. First hand accounts told to me by people on the scene say this happened at a ropeswing 200yrds downstream of the developed portion of the park. Evan was a member of the swimteam, but may have been dealing with cramps after a long day in the sun. He was not wearing a PFD. The 911 calls were placed from the Park, S&R staged out of the Park, therefore, local media has been reporting that this happened at the Park. Needless to say, its been a tough several days for many people for many different reasons. The City of Siloam Springs decided to cancel the Grand Opening of the park, which was scheduled for yesterday, June 28th. I cannot begin to tell you of all the work that had gone into having a top-notch event to celebrate, and educate the general public. Live music, free food, and free intro-to-paddling clinics to any and all... It is my opinion that the City of Siloam, and the local media missed an incredible opportunity yesterday to introduce NWA, and the region to our new playpark. With all the attention the Park has had in the last ten days, what better time? Water under the bridge now I guess. My friend, Steve Runnels decided that we should just go, and play. He invited everyone to come out, and remember that fun, and friends, and play, while not being able to heal all wounds, can at least teach us how to smile again. Thats a pretty good start.
