A man has been arrested and charged after allegedly leading police on an extensive pursuit after attempting to avoid an RBT site at Cowra last night. About 10:25pm (Friday 5 July 2013), police were performing stationary random breath testing on Redfern Street when a white Ford Courier attempted to avoid police by turning into a side street. Highway Patrol officers followed the Ford and attempted to stop it but the driver failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated. The Ford was pursued out of Cowra and onto the Mid Western Highway for 34kms allegedly reaching speeds of up to 169km/h in a 100km/h zone. It eventually stopped on a dirt road at Mandurama where the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle into a paddock. Both men were chased by police and arrested. The driver, a 19-year-old man, was taken to Cowra Police Station and charged with police pursuit-not stop-drive dangerously (Skye’s Law), police pursuit–not stop-drive at speed, being an unlicensed driver and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h. He was refused bail to appear in Orange Bail Court today (Saturday 6 July 2013). His passenger was released without charge.
