A marble image of the Buddha was found at Kaveripattanam of India , and the French governor of the district, who was approched by the Venarable Sasammatha Dhammasara thera, chief incumbent of the temple at Dodunduwa(ceylon)at the time ,gifted the statue to the temple. Later a second image of the Buddha, which was found at the same site, smaller in size, was offered to the temple by the residents of this Indian port town. This was possible because Dodunduwa had its own port, an inlet formed along an outerop of rocks at Dodunaduwa. 1802- 1869 time peirod.
