A member of friends of the media GH. Its Sunday the 10th of August 2014 and time to bring you the African History Class lectures. Today we look at the smallest country in Africa called SEYCHELLES. Republic of Seychelles is a 459km sq/177sq m island country spanning an archipelago in the Indian Ocen, whose capital city, VICTORIA lies some 1,500km east of mainland, southeast Africa. It is the smallest country in Africa with an estimated population of 90,024. It borders with Zanzibar, Comoros, Madagascar and Mauritius and also a member of African Union. Some scholars assume that Austronesian Seafarers and later Maldivian and Arab traders were the first to visit the uninhabited Seychelles in the 12 century. It was later served as a transit point for trade between African and Asia. Its ethnic groups includes Seychellois creole-93.2%, British-3.0%, French-1.8%, Chinese-0.5%, Indians-0.3% and others 1.2%. The people speak English, French and Seychellois creole. Their current president is James Michel and it has 5years term in office as stated in their constitution. Seychelles gained it independence from the British on 29th January, 1976. It is divided into twenty-six administrative regions that comprise of all the inner islands. Their main foreign exchange earner is their tourist site and exportation of cinnamon, vanilla and copra. Their motto:FINIS CORONAT OPUS meaning THE END CROWNS THE WORK.
