A message from Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson MP. Burrinjuck celebrates International Day for People with Disability Nationals Member for Burrinjuck, Katrina Hodgkinson has welcomed International Day for People with Disability, encouraging local residents to get involved. “Today, on International Day of People with Disability, we celebrate and recognise the achievements, contributions and abilities of people with disability,” said Katrina. “It is about recognising people for what their abilities are, rather than their disability.” The Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign has been celebrating the achievements, and raising awareness of the barriers to participation, for people with disability throughout the month in the lead up to International Day for People with Disability. Katrina said one of the NSW Governments priorities is to increase opportunities for people with disability to assist them in realising their potential. “Celebrating International Day of People with Disability draws attention to the diversity and ability of people with disability and encourages inclusive communities. “That’s the focus of this year’s Don’t DIS my ABILITY campaign – encouraging people to make a conscious effort every day to build inclusive communities,” Katrina said. In the last 11 years, since Don’t DIS my ABILITY was launched, the NSW Government has made the National Disability Insurance Scheme a reality, by being the first state to sign up in 2012. There has been record annual investment in disability services in NSW, and Australia ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
