A message from Trustee Bruce Summa: Greetings from Village Hall------CONGRATULATIONS to the residents of Mastic Beach. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pass my resolution ENDING the contractor list registration requirement forcing you to limit your choices and only use contractors who were on the village list. How appropriate, as we have just finished celebrating the 4th of July releasing us from the tyranny of King George III and his taxation without representation, that we should be released from similar oppressive legislation. YOU ARE NOW FREE TO MAKE YOUR OWN CHOICES MY FELLOW COLONISTS! The only requirement is that the contractor you use must have a valid Suffolk County license which is a county requirement. However remember this, freedom comes with personal responsibility and dont come crying to me or any other board member if you get ripped off. Et Caveat Emptor -- Let the Buyer Beware! The resolution to streamline the building permit process by bypassing the Planning Board has been tabled for further research and discussion. The intent was to not have the Planning Board review renovations to residential homes under 500 sq. feet. Two members of the Planning Board spoke and gave examples of homes where renovations were done which totally infringed upon the character of the neighborhood. One example being a home in Massapequa which put up Gothic turrets (under 500 sq feet) and poured fake blood from the turrets to simulate a Dracula style castle that the neighborhood had to live with and could do nothing about. It was pointed out that five sets of eyes reviewing renovation plans are better than one set and I agree. This will be discussed at the August work session on August 6th followed by the general meeting on August 12th. On July 26th and 27th will be the 2cd annual Seafest sponsored by the Cultural Arts Group starting at 10am at Violets Cove followed by Music on the Bay sponsored by the Mastic Beach Property Owners Assn. starting at 7pm by the east marina at Riviera and Elm. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT FERAL CATS AND FREE SPAYING --- On Thursday, July 17th, the ARF organization will be having a mobile animal clinic in the parking lot at Village Hall. Feral cats can be brought in for free spaying and vaccinations. Cats MUST be brought in in raccoon traps and not hand delivered. The cats will be dropped off between 9am to 10pm in the traps along with the name and address of the person bringing in the cat. They can be picked up between 4-5pm that day. If we get enough animals brought in, the the mobile vet unit can make Mastic Beach a regular stop. We are in need of traps to give out to people temporarily wanting to trap feral cats for this service. If you have any you can lend or donate or have money you wish to donate to purchase these traps then please call Gail Riccobono at 631 281 0121 or Vinnie Martin at 631 561 8555. These two ladies live in Mastic Beach and do this out of there own pocket and can certainly use the help both manpower-wise and financially as well. TIME IS CRITICAL! Call now if you can help. Finally, I wish to discuss a matter of public safety that I have been silent about waiting for the proper chain of command to do something about. It concerns the occupancy rating for the village hall meeting room. Last night was the first meeting that I have attended as an elected official that was within the legal occupancy rate of 95 people. The April, May and June general meetings were all over capacity with Newsday reporting one meeting at 130 people. If this trend continues it is obvious that our new village hall is inadequate to hold general meetings let alone a meeting of significant importance to the community. I would hope to have our Fire Marshall present at the next meeting to monitor the safety of our citizens. Trustee Summa
