A message from our Director of Curriculum and Assessment, Dr. Evelyn Young: It isn’t every day that you are given the carte blanche to create a school from scratch. And it isn’t every day that a school is born in the midst of a perfect storm: the generous financial backing of education investors and entrepreneurs; the unparalleled expertise of board members in the fields of medical science, nanotechnology, media arts and entertainment, business, law, and education; and the creative vision, experience, and tireless energy of a school leadership team that is committed to change U.S. education for the better. American University Preparatory School (AUP) came into being under such auspicious circumstances, and the promises it holds simply takes one’s breath away. We began AUP with a very ambitious goal, and that was to build a school that would not only produce global citizens, but also students who are competent in the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields, savvy with research and product development, and effective leaders and communicators. We wanted every bit of the rigor and discipline required of an AP curriculum, but we also wanted our students to be life-long thinkers and tinkerers. To do so, we knew that we had to allocate time in an already packed schedule for students to tinker and collaborate in project-based learning activities. We decided to allocate M, W, F for lectures and class discussions using a combination of traditional, blended, and flipped format, and Tu and Th for research, labs, projects, programming, performing, and product creations. Real estate agents always go by the mantra location, location, location. AUP is located in the heart of the financial district in downtown Los Angeles. The richness and diversity of the city life that AUP offers is unlike any other boarding school in the country. The variety of internship possibilities alone in this hubbub of business corporations, law firms, art & entertainment industries, and sports agencies is staggering, not to mention the wealth of resources at your fingertips. Our proximity to USC, UCLA, CalTech, California Science Center, L.A. Philharmonic, Nokia Theater, STAPLES Center, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), and Walt Disney Concert Hall offers students an academic, cultural, and theatrical experience that cannot be gained in a closed and remote 20-acre campus. All excursions into the city center, of course, are supervised. Our students learn real-world applications in real time, and their gradual acculturation to life outside of the school grounds gives them a far better preparation for college life upon graduation.
