A million thanks to everyone for your support during this scary 24 hour roller coaster ride. I received a phone call yesterday that my mom was having memory issues and didnt seem like herself. First thought was, stroke. Second though was, her brain tumor, which was removed in 1992 was back somehow. Third thought was, what else could this be?... Although she is having many tests to rule out everything it looks like she has (or had) transient global amnesia. From the Mayo Clinic website: Transient global amnesia is a sudden, temporary episode of memory loss that cant be attributed to a more common neurological condition, such as epilepsy or stroke. During an episode of transient global amnesia, your recall of recent events simply vanishes, so you cant remember where you are or how you got there. In addition, you may not remember anything about whats happening in the here and now. Consequently, you may keep repeating the same questions because you dont remember the answers youve just been given. You may also draw a blank when asked to remember things that happened a day, a month or even a year ago. With transient global amnesia, you do remember who you are, and recognize the people you know well. But that doesnt make your memory loss less disturbing. Fortunately, transient global amnesia is rare, seemingly harmless and unlikely to happen again. Episodes are usually short-lived, and afterward your memory is fine. This, strangely enough, is good news. It may have been triggered by acute emotional distress. This is the first Christmas without my father where none of us kids will be around as well. My mothers friends are including her in on their festivities which will be fun but its still emotional. My sister Corrie is on her way to St. Louis to make sure the transition period goes well. We hope everything is back to normal very soon.
