A misspent youth watching late night films on television could be said to be a waste of an adolescence. However, growing up in the middle of nowhere there was a little choice, and it did mean I got to see some fairly mind-warping films. One of these was David Cronenbergs controversial film Crash. In the interests of maintaining some level of public decency (and my job), I wont go into the details of the plot. However, of the cars featured, one stuck in my mind – the Lincoln Continental. That car is a 1962, but the one weve got here is a 1963 model. Its up for sale with Bonhams at its Preserving the Automobile sale in Philadelphia in October. Dont be put off by its slightly ragged appearance, as mechanically its in excellent nick – but its never been restored. Anyway, I love the weathered look of those red leather seats and the dusty dashboard. Each crease tells a story, and its a thing of wonder to imagine the tales it could tell. Its lived in Florida for many years, and as us Brits shiver our way into the winter months, its a pleasing mental image to dream of cruising through the Florida Keys, cigar in hand and something suitably dark and menacing on the stereo (Id go for some Demdike Stare, but thats just me), that 430ci V8 delivering its 320bhp in a wonderfully wasteful manner. Id have to think twice about taking it to a car wash, however… This ones up for sale with Bonhams and has an estimate of $20k-$25k. Thats just £12k! Anyone care to lend me £11,965 + shipping costs?
