A movie about SHENANDOAH, AKRON or R101? Well in each case (especially in this day and age) somebody would probably end up in JAIL! Having started to study airships in 1973 (age 11) and got to meet many of the original participants due to my luck of geographical proximity to Lakehurst, can only say that the AKRON has fascinated and perplexed me more than many. (In modern terms, a gigantic machine takes off on a routine flight in Wx that realy should have everybody say Why? except that you had an ambitious Commander who wanted to impress an Admiral and guests that they came from Washington *by automobile* because the weather was too bad to fly up...against the backdrop that the dirigible was probably going to be *laid up* on or about 30 June once her sister was in the air and deployed to the Pacific. And *no lifejackets* despite the fact that she was a naval vessel flying over the ocean) About ten years ago, met a woman named Carol Hager White, whose father Kurt Hager had served as a Rigger on the AKRON. Kurt had passed about six years previously (still playing basketball with his grandkids until he smashed a knee at age 83) and she showed me a video interview of her Father taken by a neighbor. The interview (about an hour and a half long) was like watching GRASS GROW, but all-of-the-sudden he brightened and talked about cimbing to the top of the airship and how he enjoyed sticking his upper body out the top and looking back at the fins and looking forward and seeing the clouds fly past his face and I said to myself This is worth the entire EXCRUCIATING sitting! For those few minutes on tape, Kurt was a 22-year-old kid again. Capture that moment and youve got a feeling for a documentary, no matter what airship it is.
