A new film, Bayou Maharajah is coming to the UK for a one-off showing in three weeks time. The documentary explores the life and music of New Orleans piano legend James Booker, the man Dr. John described as “the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced.” Jools Holland called him his hero; he played on some of Fats Domino’s recordings, instead of Fats himself. Though a brilliant pianist, his eccentricities and showmanship belied a life of struggle, prejudice, and isolation. More than just a portrait of the life of a musician - whose talent and influence went way beyond his fame - Bayou Maharajah allows Booker’s music to speak for itself, giving the audience plenty of opportunity to appreciate his exceptional piano playing. The film is showing at 3pm on Saturday July 26th at the Hackney Picturehouse. After the film, Dom Pipkin – accomplished London-based, New Orleans inspired pianist - will be playing live.
