A note about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge... The ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge” ~ the Diocese of Peoria offers the following guidance: This challenge is sweeping the nation via social media and is helping to raise awareness and money for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) research. Within our own Catholic community, many of our families have suffered and continue to suffer from this disease. We continue our prayers for them. For those that want to “take the ice bucket challenge,” let us make sure that our participation is reflective and supportive of a moral means of research to end this disease. The ALS Association currently supports embryonic stem cell research, a form of research that involves the destruction of the most innocent of human life. Therefore, a moral alternative to supporting the end of this disease would be to consider donating to the John Paul II Medical Research Institute, Cell Therapy Foundation, or Compassionate Care ALS. “To achieve the good end (cure) we must always proceed by the good means (ethical research).” N.B.: JPII Medical Research Institute stated goal is to budget 65-70% of all donations directly to medical research. The ALS Association’s budget designated 27% to medical research.
