A number of Woking businesses are in jeopardy The future for a number of businesses in Woking hangs in the balance. A six month road closure on Vicarage road is causing traffic jams, which means customers cant easily access the local companies. One of the local business owners is Andrew Jackson. He runs Beggars Banquets and is worried about the future of his business: The last three weeks we have seen our business halved, were mainly on a busy road and we have a lot of pop in trade. We can tread water for two or three weeks but we wont last six months thats for sure. We have built up over 15 years a successful, reliable business and weve now seen people just not coming round this way. We had quite a good year up to then but its now just nose-dived. A petition has now been set up, calling for Surrey County Council to reconsider the closure. The petition reads: On Tuesday 11th November Thames Water closed Vicarage Road for a period of 26 weeks to upgrade sewage infrastructure for the Kingsmoor Park development. The closure has already caused rush hour havoc for local residents, commuters travelling through the area, and children on their way to the areas various schools; with reported delays on Westfield Avenue of up to 40 minutes. The closure was effected with little to no consultation of residents, insufficient prior notification of the full extent of the closure and poor efforts to mitigate the impacts. We petition the Council to reconsider how the closure may be shortened or mitigated to reduce impact. We also petition the Council to bring to account all departments and persons involved in the closure, to (1) Show that such blatant disregard for residents wellbeing is not considered acceptable by Surrey County Council, (2) Ensure that similarly misjudged closures do not occur again in the future. A spokesperson from Surrey County Council said: Due to the size of the new under ground pipe, work cannot be undertaken without closing Vicarage Road to traffic for the duration of the project. The footways do remain open for pedestrian traffic. A spokesperson from Thames Water said: Were sorry for the disruption the work were carrying out on behalf of Kier Partnership Homes is causing. Weve worked hard to keep affected residents informed of the plans and are doing everything we can to accommodate their needs during what we appreciate will be a difficult period.
