A parent asks our group: A little background... My daughter doesnt have an official clinical diagnosis but it was suggested by a therapist a couple years ago or more that she fits the description of an SPD kiddo. Ive researched it and she has over half of the symptoms so without an official diagnosis by a medical professional, weve proceeded as if she does have it. Shes received therapy since she was 8 months and has received OT, PT, DT and Speech at some point. Shes 6 now and only receiving Speech because shes doing really well in most other areas. She still has minor issues and delays here and there but nothing major. Ill also add that shes a former 24weeker. Fast forward to the present. Shes part avoider, part seeker. Shes a climber, jumper, constantly trying crazy things but has issues with crowds, new situations and people, noises, etc, as well as major oral sensory issues (temperature, choking and gagging) and some tactile (socks, tags). At school shes made great progress and her therapist and teachers have told me she doesnt have meltdowns (her meltdowns are her panicking and not talking, hanging onto me, pulling away from a situation, soft crying, no screaming fits or anything) but theyre increasing at home! Its a daily battle at home. I dont coddle her and always try to push her to step outside of her comfort zone so its not like I baby her and give into her so I dont know why this is happening. Anyone else experiencing this? Kiddo is tough as nails at school and overly sensitive at home? Another concern is that she has this stuffed animal that shes had since 3. Shes never really been overly attached to it but now it goes EVERYWHERE with her. She talks to it, it talks to her, she creates situations with it (it needs to use the bathroom, its hungry, it unrolled the toilet paper...), almost like an imaginary friend. Is it a coping mechanism? Im sure its for security but could the two be linked? Does that make any sense? Sorry this is so long but I appreciate any input!
