A penny for your thought. Unfortunately this saying became a reality on a unforgettable trip with my Nana. At 16 year old, my grandmother made a life learning opportunity available for me. In order to go, I had the responsibility to pay $500 and Nana took care of the rest. I remember stashing away every cent. We went on a 14 day Caribbean Cruise. Mom made me a new wardrobe with matching coordinates. I hated history because I could not relate therefore I had no idea what I was truly in for. The ship was gorgeous. We picked eating early in the dining room and I had two rules to adhere to..(1) I had to be present for every meal (2) I had to be with Nana every time I went ashore. Easy! First stop...Haiti. The ship was too large or the port to shallow, so we had to ride a tender to shore. As we stood at the railings of the ship waiting for the tenders to retrieve us, I watched as children swam ahead of the tenders out to the ship and people threw coins as if feeding ducks. The kids collected the coins in their mouths while trying to beg for more. I stood overwhelmed and stunned. By the time the tender reached the ship, the childrens cheeks were filled like chipmunks and quickly swam back to shore. Later I labelled what I watched as Ugly Americans and wondered if I was one too. This experience was the beginning of changing my worldview. With more to come... Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord! O who has been his counselor?
