A pileated woodpecker, a short-tailed weasel and a fox. I - TopicsExpress

A pileated woodpecker, a short-tailed weasel and a fox. I posted a short natural history about the short-tailed weasel (zhingos) last Friday and have had postings on the fox (waagoosh) before but these are the first photos of a pileated woodpecker (baapaase) that I posted. When I walk through the woods, I do not always bemoan a big dead tree, perhaps a 150 year old white pine, because I know that soon it will be laden with countless carpenter ants and their eggs which are the main stay of this big woodpecker. The large cavities that they excavate in dead trees become nesting holes for many other birds, owls, squirrels, fishers....a great host of other species. These dead trees make my forest and all the forest land around me a mighty fortress. They are natures equivalent to an apartment building. When in the forest, look beyond what we consider pretty or healthy. Everything is inter-connected...we are all related....Chi Maiingan
