A plague across America The pit bull is a furry locust with a lawn mower mouth. Why you should NOT breed or own or support the APBT/ Pit Bull/American Bulldog/Am Staff/game dog types of canines. 75% of shelters across the United States euthanize Pit Bull types when they come in, giving them NO chance for adoption (thank god). Some of the more lenient shelters will give them 24 hours to get adopted. If only we could get that number to 100% with no wait period!! Pit Bull type dogs are the most overbred dog in the United States, and ironically they are the hardest breed to find homes. Only 1 in 600 Pit Bull types will find a forever home. For every 1 Pit Bull type, 599 are killed. Approximately 800,000 Pit Bull type dogs are given up and euthanized every year in the United States. Animal shelters euthanize about 3 to 4 million dogs and cats a year, Pit Bull types account for almost 1 million of those euthanized Not breeding your Pit Bull type dog will not cause them to go extinct, (only in a perfect world could that happen) due to the Pit Bull overpopulation it will save the lives of the already born and unwanted pit bull types in shelters and rescues and lower the Pit Bull euthanasia percentage. Unfortunately these dogs cannot be handled properly by the overwhelming majority of people who want a macho or tough looking dog. There should be strict controls on who owns these types of dogs. Denver and many other cities have banned them from their city limits altogether. Much of the blame for this population explosion lies with the convict/gangster/thug life, hip hop culture, and dog fighting enthusiasts. Hip hop should be on its way to a smaller niche market (just like real rock and roll music) and hopefully that will help lessen the numbers of this plague dog, but the damage has been done. We have been overrun. Our country has been invaded by one type of dog that should be easy to eliminate. We did not get rid of asbestos by ASKING people not to make it anymore, we banned it. Kids are not getting poisoned on lead painted toys anymore; do you know why? Because we outlawed lead paint. Legislation is necessary if we are ever going to get a handle on this epidemic. My little terrier dog was bred to kill mice...........he will not mistake a dog for a rodent. These pits/ABs/etc. were bred to kill dogs and attack large animals..................not fit for a pet dog in a civilized society.. And for you pit lovers out there...........if yours is one of the good ones, then I am sure you wont mind proving it with a Canine Good Citizen test or something similar. Unfortunately even dogs that pass this fairly easy test can be unpredictable in certain situations that excite their drive. Obviously not all Pit types are bad.There are submissive and friendly dogs in EVERY one of the 400-500 breeds............................but how can you tell when one is loose and barreling down on you and your dog while out on the trail? I ,for one, am not going to take a chance and wait to see what happens. I will shoot first and ask questions later because my dog is part of my family, not an accessory for my street cred image. Better to take a ticket for unlawful discharge of a firearm than to take my dog to the crematory after being killed. Better to be tried by twelve than carried by six
