A post on the Tell the Torygraph website is commenting on Vinyl, and resurgence of the Black Disc Format. The link is at: tellthetelegraph.co.uk/forum/view/forum/635944030/post/311626147 I still have my treasured Vinyl collection, as an ex DJ I would not part with any of my albums or singles. I now realise I have some serious omissions, and while not being able to afford some of the prices on e-bay or in Record Collector, I still pick through Vinyl collections in gift shops. I did go CD in 1989, but there are some albums where the CD just strangles the sound, Fleetwood Mac Rumours, and Elton Reg Dwight Johns excellent second Black album. Who pressed the record may affect the reproduction, some manufacturers were better than others. Rolling Stones early Decca label albums were excellent if pressed by Decca, but after the Polygram merger, the Phonodisc Walthamstow pressings were awful. Identifying good and bad pressings was a science in itself, but also it depended on your hardware, most importantly the quality of the pickup tonearm, the Cartridge and the condition of your stylus, ideally an elliptical diamond. One product marketed today advertises sapphire styli - NO NO! I could go on but my kit is a Technics 1210, ADC XLM or Shure M75ED T2. There are better more expensive Turntables and cartridges, but so long as you handle with care and use kit at least as good, keep the surface clean, you will still enjoy beautiful music! Sadly the Technics 1200 is not in production, but I believe it has been taken on and reworked by Audio Technica. If you want to update your kit, start at a dealer like Richer Sounds, but plenty of other good HiFi dealers are around. Buy a good analogue HiFi magazine, sit in the bath/loo/train/bus or wherever, and check out the products then look at the web site. Your amplifier must have a Phono RIAA equalised input, good amps @ £200 + should do, as well as a CD input.
