A quite unusual activity in Bujumbura happened on Saturday, November 1. A Dutch army unit present in Bujumbura invited Dutch residents of Burundi to help with the rehabilitation of the military hospital in Kamenge. This civil mission of the Dutch army is reconstructing this hospital to ensure that Burundian UN-soldiers can be nursed in Burundi if they are injured on one of their UN-missions. The engineering company of the Dutch army was assisted by volunteers to speed up the process of reconstruction. Sandpaper, brushes, tape and a lot of sweat were the ingredients for a very pleasant and fruitful morning of development work. Of course, personnel of the embassy rolled up their sleeves too, together with Dutch residents, Burundians and Dutch soldiers. Progress has been made given the paint stains and dusty faces that were present after the volunteers finished their work. For now, the engineering company will stay for another week to complete the right wing of the hospital. Another army unit will return in February to complete the left and last wing of the hospital. After that, the hospital should be in operation and should take care of the first injured Burundian UN-soldiers.
