A quote for Good Friday—this is what the Messiah’s love has accomplished: “‘One died for all, and therefore all died’: that is about as central a Pauline statement of the meaning of Jesus’ death that we could wish for. And Paul’s point is that this is at the centre, too, of his apostolic ministry: this death, the manner of it, and the love that brought it about, have transformed Paul’s vision of how the one God was going to act in relation to the whole world – have transformed, in other words, his vision of ‘election’, of God’s covenant purposes and his faithfulness to them. Indeed, through the Messiah God has affected the greatest purpose of all: the renewal of creation itself, adumbrated in each person who is now ‘in the Messiah’ (5.17).
