A quote from Phillips & Pugh (2010). From the point of view of the PhD process, you are not doing the research for its own sake, although that might be your own personal motivation; you are doing it in order to demonstrate that you are a fully professional researcher, with a good grasp of what is happening in your field and capable of evaluating the impact of new contributions to it – your own as well as others’. That is what you get the doctorate for. The best part is this you are not doing the research for its own sake. It must be remembered that there has to be a sufficient amount of autonomy for the student to be able to make an original contribution. It is this which justifies the award of the PhD degree.
