A recent study of marriages showed that your marriage is more likely to be successful if you spent less money on the actual wedding day Sadly, we are amongst the biggest and most extravagant spenders when it comes to this. I have often come across people who have been saving money for years so they can have extravagant weddings for their children - usually to please the people. The brothers struggle to finance such ostentatious occasions let alone fulfil the crazy mahr demands of the family. Worse still, we now have cases of the boys family demanding mahr from the girl! How right was sheikhul islam Ibn Taymiyyah when he said: Whoever thinks of increasing his daughter’s mahr and asking for more than the daughters of the Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alayhi wa sallam) were given – when they were the best women in this world in all aspects – is an ignorant fool (Majmu al-Fatawa) Parents should reflect on that statement. If you love your daughter then it is not shown by hiring a fancy hall or expensive cars. If you love your daughter, it is not shown by insisting on a wealthy husband. Love for your daughter is actualised by marrying her to someone who has the correct aqeedah and is following the sunnah so that her dunya and akhira will be rectified by the permission of Allah. Make marriage easy for that is best. The messenger of Allah said - “The best of mahrs is the simplest (or most affordable).” (Al-Haakim and al-Bayhaqi, classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’) He also said “The best of marriage is that which is made easiest.” (Ibn Hibbaan, classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’)
