A request/an idea: Ive been having a series of conversations with folk infuriated by the draconian policies implemented in the Dominican Republic that target Haitian migrants and Haitian residents in the DR. The call for boycott is a complex one considering the impact that it could have in the lives of a populace that is already overwhelmingly impacted by economic disparity. I am already considering the local driver that Ive befriended and use when there. The work enables him to support his family. Yet, policies surface as a result of a set of ideas already circulating among majorities (and/or those in power). Its a policy and ideology problem! The anti-Haitian sentiments run deep and are the result of a fraught relationship between the islands (really, a consequence of colonialism); and, as a result, anti-blackness is evidenced in some horrific ways. Given the unjust policies and acts of violence aimed at Haitians, Ive decided to join the boycott. This decision comes after recently returning from Santo Domingo, which I love. I am specifically considering the gay tourism that brings bodies and money...gay tourism that in many ways invisibilizes the ills (even our own complicit participation in economic disenfranchisement). I was stopped, grabbed, by police after leaving a gay club while walking beside a Haitian DR resident. They let me go quickly after they were told I was a US citizen, but that action was nothing new to him. I plan to co-write something but also am encouraging folk, who are willing, to make short video statements that are easily accessible via YouTube. Thanks to Bryan MC Epps for the idea. Inbox me if you are interested in co-writing or signing onto a statement (specifically one targeted at LGBT folk who tend to travel to the island) and/or creating individual vids. Peace...
