A single rose A visit to my husband’s family was a great idea, - TopicsExpress

A single rose A visit to my husband’s family was a great idea, but it also meant a ten-hour car ride. We had been driving most of the day when we stopped for gas a few miles from Michael’s parents’ house. Instead of being excited by our proximity to non–public restrooms and home cooking, we were road-weary and irritable. I walked inside to pay for the gas, frowning, my eyes looking down at the ground. A woman paying for snacks saw the expression on my face and bought a single red rose at the counter. She presented it to me with a smile and walked out. My whole attitude changed instantly. It was like my vacation had a fresh start. I was beaming when I took it back to the car to show Michael. It melted his heart, too—and he’d been doing all the driving! TANYA RICHARDSON, NEW YORK
