A snippet from Chapter 2 of a Longer story I wrote a while back "Dakota and the Roughnecks" - Was done as a gift for a very good friend. 1000 meters… “Lead to all Gravs… disembark at 500 meters and go for NOE flight to contact with the enemy, 2 and 4 will saturation assault with the Torps, 1 and 3 will take the heavy spoonhead units with direct fire.” 800 meters… The silence on the comm meant they were ready, they were Marines this is what they did, pull victory from defeat and still wonder what was to go on after lunch… Walker smiled to himself, this was their time, no other unit could have done what they were doing and it still could fail, a few lucky shots, bad timing… anything. 600 meters… “Nightingale flight to cargo, it’s been a pleasure to serve…” “And with you Dodger, get these folks home. We got work to do.” 550 meters The back hatches on the 4 Troopships opened and the cargo clamps that held the Patton AFV inside the ships released “Lead to all Gravs, deploy in 3…2…1… DEPLOY!” 500 meters. With the grace of eagles they slid on the Gravdrives out the back of the troopships, adjusting angle they dived to the deck at maximum speed, the ground becoming a blur below them. Above and behind them the troopships turned and decelerated massively and turned hard for the LZ where the civilians waited. “Run up the colors…”
