A statement from our Director of City & Environmental Services in response to this Daily Mail article: Darren Richardson, Director of City and Environmental Services, said: “The quality of York’s public spaces are fundamental to sustaining the city’s present and future prosperity and it’s important to everyone who lives, works, visits and invests in our city “York’s 2,000 year old history is unique and it’s imperative that when any works are carried out in the city our important heritage is always preserved and respected. Nevertheless, whilst York’s history is unique it’s also evolutionary in terms of its roads and footpaths, and we need to adapt this in modern times as we have done for centuries and address some of the current problems for disabled or far less abled members of the community by replacing paving with high-quality materials. “As York’s heritage continues to reinvent itself as the decades and centuries pass we recognised that King’s Square needed quite a radical rethink to make it a world-class space. “Residents and businesses were consulted on these proposed changes and will continue to play an integral part in any decisions made.
