A sure sign that spring is coming: the people of Christchurch, New Zealand have farewelled the godwits back to Alaska. This amazing shorebird, better known as the Bar-tailed Godwit (or Kuaka in NZ), undergoes the most epic of all migrations. In the fall they leave Alaska and fly ~7,000 miles over water to NZ in roughly 8 day--without stopping, eating or drinking! Absolutely mind-boggling. Their return trip to AK is even longer, but includes a few refueling stops along the east coast of Asia.
