A therapeutic use of the Zen koan in Clinical Practice: A - TopicsExpress

A therapeutic use of the Zen koan in Clinical Practice: A patient had been unconsciously motivated since his childhood by the pain felt when his father had left home. His entire life thesis and ego identification was built on his evidence that nothing of value could be retained in life. Sensing that the patient had reached the turning point in his path of healing I informed him that his father had not left him and that, in fact, he had left his father. The patient was not able to interpret what I had said in terms of any previous life experience. He was, in essence, brought fully present into the moment. The silence that emerged in this instant signaled the collapse of the habituated mind and the reassertion of the primordial Qi as a guiding influence in this patients life. - Lonny Jarrett in Nourishing Destiny
