A thought just struck me which would not cost the Government too much. Could they not give Iarnród Éireann a few million euro to enable the company to avoid staff pay cuts for less than two months until the Budget. Then cut the USC for railwaymen to offset the threatened pay cuts and let the company impose the pay cut then. That way the Rail workers would still have the same take-home pay as they have at the moment, and it would avoid the legacy of bitterness and mistrust that occurs in any dispute. Remember all disputes have to be settled sooner or later, and in this case the sooner the better. The workers would not lose out and the Company would achieve its savings. After all it is the government cutbacks in subsidy to Iarnród Éireann that is at the root of the current dispute.
