A tribute on Basant Panchami Day. “Ghrinaa paap se karo, paapi se nahi…”, bachpan se sunti aayee thi ye shabd, magar samajh hee nahi payee kabhi. How to distinguish and differentiate ‘paap’ and ‘paapi’ was such a challenging task… Weren’t they one and the same thing? Sometimes, we keep living with a certain piece of knowledge all our lives, and having heard it over and over again makes us feels as if we understand it just too well. But maybe, that is not always true. It just takes a flash of realization that dawns just in a fraction of a second that makes us understand its underlying meaning and the real purpose hidden behind it. The same thing happened with this truth also. It so happened that according to a government norm,(in Karnataka), we had to get the sewage (drainage) pipes of our apartment changed to ones of a bigger diameter. As I am a part of the managing committee, I was also supervising the task off and on. Just mentioning the name of sewer may have you all get a feeling of repugnant, revolting and smelly repulsion in your minds. Yes, in reality, it was much, much worse. It not only looked very dirty but also smelt horrific. We were all flitting in and out of the place, covering our noses and making faces. More so because it was a sunny day and the drain water was evaporating too at a great speed. Evaporation…and that was the one epiphanic moment that came like a flash and set me thinking…. Weren’t we all like the water….pure in its original state, a part of the ganges just like the ‘atman’ is a part of the lord himself? Don’t we too dissolve the impurities of ill karmas, evil deeds on our journey onto the Earth, or the ‘mrityulok’. We constantly keep on doing karma, as it is impossible to live without doing karma. Not doing karma is also karma as stated by Lord Krishna in the ‘Gita’. Some of that karma is labelled as “good karma” and some of it as “bad Karma”. We might have performed it consciously and knowingly or unconsciously and unknowingly. But we do absorb impurities in our life times due to which, the Atma, which in its mool swaroop is pure in nature, keeps on grieving and lamenting and craving for going back to its original, pure form. Maybe, we don’t understand the call of our atma consciously, but are always aware of it unconsciously. And hence, we appeal to Guruji to shower us with HIS blessing and help us in achieving our goal and reaching our Ultimate destination. And HE does, just like the selfless SUN, who shines upon the putrid drain water and with its immense heat, makes the water return to its original, immaculate form. And this is how, I realized, Guruji ‘s grace(just like the sun’s rays on dirty water) makes us get rid of Our paap karmas and makes our atma return to its original and pure form. But then, along with all this realization that I had, I also came across a question in my mind…”Are we all willing to bear the heat of the Sun without complaint and without protest?” Or will we be so spiritually weak and break down at the first small pain and lament…”Oh Lord! Why Me? Why do I suffer so much when the world rests in peace?” Because, if we have laid our own selves at the feet of the divine lord, then we must also surrender all our pleasures and pains at HIS lotus feet and let HIM guide us in our spiritual journey and happily endure whatever befalls us with the feeling in our heart that whatever is happening is because of our own good.
