A tribute to Diane Disney Miller, post 1 By Roger Colton: Diane was, and always will be, just Diane. Okay, so she was the daughter of Walt & Lillian Disney, as well as the wife of Ron Miller, mother and grandmother, too. Every time I saw her, she never put on any guise to be anyone but who she was. There was nothing about her that you could label “insincere,” as some folks in similar situations could be described. What you saw was what you got. She was honest and told you what she thought, no couching answers to questions in riddles. She was, after all, her father’s daughter. Having said this, I admired her greatly for that. For many people who had the opportunity to meet her, she was their living link to a showman whose influence cannot be denied. That man who came into living rooms across the country on Sunday nights to share the latest scoop on movies or Disneyland or sometimes, just a good story. She was welcoming to everyone who visited the Museum and always willing to listen as visitors shared their own stories. One can easily appreciate how that might seem daunting or seem repetitive. Yet, it wasnt. Walt Disney was just her dad. She knew him in ways we never would, as it should be between a father and a daughter. She saw him during low moments in his life and in some of the best, such as the opening of Disneyland and the 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley. Who better to champion a project such as the Museum to tell the true story of his life, than his daughter? During a press event at the Museum, I recall hearing Diane being asked if she would write a book to share many of the great stories she would share from time to time. She just smiled and laughed, saying that the Museum “was her book.” Indeed, we who were lucky enough to meet her (even if only for a few moments), miss her. As we remember her, we have a great facility in the Walt Disney Family Museum to share the story of her father and her family with us. That is a wonderful legacy for us to remember her by.
