A truly remarkable and inspirational Australian, Dr. Catherine - TopicsExpress

A truly remarkable and inspirational Australian, Dr. Catherine Hamlin, has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize!!! Along with her late husband, Dr. Reg Hamlin, Catherine Hamlin has been treating Ethiopian women suffering from obstetric fistula since 1959. Obstetric fistula is caused when a pregnant woman with a badly positioned baby is in medically unrelieved labour for up to a week, before giving birth to a stillborn child. A fistula is a hole in the bladder or bowel and results in permanent incontinence. These women become outcasts from their villages and are sometimes rejected by their family. Many suffer a deep sense of shame and failure. The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital has provided a safe haven where fistula patients are treated free of charge. Dr Reg Hamlin died in August 1993 but Catherine’s work amongst obstetric fistula sufferers has continued uninterrupted for more than half a century, despite major political upheavals and civil war in Ethiopia. Well over 35,000 patients have been treated in that time. To find out more about this incredible women and how she has impacted the lives of so many, pick up a copy of ‘Catherine’s Gift’ or ‘Hospital by the River’ at the Hamlin Online Store.
