A very common question from new-to-therapy clients: Ive never been to therapy. What can I expect? Will I have to lay down on the couch? Before I answer the question, I like to ask clients what their expectations are to see how close they come to the counseling process. Most clients have heard about therapy even if they havent attended a session before. Once we discuss their expectations, I tell them the following: I like to take a teamwork approach with clients and that means we keep the lines of communication open and if you also need to incorporate other health care professionals, Ill get releases signed to do consults with your doctor, chiropractor, etc. You can also expect respect from me. If I say something that doesnt make sense, or even offends you (because I never mean to offend), Id like you to ask questions, get clarification, and let me know whats important to you. I offer transparency. I will let you know what your diagnosis is for insurance purposes. Im not really into labels so I will not treat you like your diagnosis. I also thinks its important for you to know that counseling will make you feel worse before you feel better. As we explore deeper thoughts and feelings, it may make you uncomfortable. If that happens, please let me know so we can decide together how to proceed. Ill encourage you to feel some discomfort but not to the point of paralysis. Well go at your pace. Well use different interventions but mainly I do talk therapy. I do like to incorporate music, writing, movies, and whatever your interests are as a way to help you heal. Well use your strengths to empower you to make positive changes. And finally, you may lay down on the couch but its not mandatory.
