A week ago I had the honor of being a small part of the WWII - TopicsExpress

A week ago I had the honor of being a small part of the WWII Submarine Veterans Memorial here in Kings Bay. We had nearly 300 people from out of town come to our small corner of Georgia for 4 or 5 days, and assist us in paying tribute to our WWI Heroes, and submariners from the Korean, Vietnam and cold war eras, as well as salute our sailors manning our boats today. Nearly 500 people attended the Memorial Ceremony on Friday, where I had the honor of being one of the speakers. We were extremely blessed to have had 22 WWII Submarine Veterans with us at the ceremony, one form as far away as California, and you will see some of them in these photos. Sadly, one of those WWII Submarine Veterans who was with us from Titusville, Florida, passed away on Monday November 10th after returning home from being here in Kings Bay with us. Leon E. Gaus was 90 years old, and one of our Submarine Heroes. I salute you sir, and now you have the eternal fair winds and following seas you so richly earned in this life on earth. I have made a $100 contribution to the St. Marys Submarine Museum Building Fund in your honor sir, so your memory will live on at our Museum. Rest in peace shipmate .... we have the watch. (My thanks to my good friend Melinda Nesmith-Picard for taking these excellent photographs and sharing them with me!)
