A while back I watched this 3-part foodie series on YouTube, a BBC production documenting the history of breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the British perspective, going all the way back to medieval times. I was struck by the fact that spirituality and food used to be very strongly tied together. In Great Britain, the Catholic church used to guide the entire population in their food choices--the idea being that what one eats should support spiritual growth. In other words, what we eat affects our relationship with the Divine. Then along came Henry the VIII who diminished and devalued the status of the church, and indulgence and decadence became the goal. All this from a morbidly overweight king who killed most of his wives and who was so unhealthy he had a stinky wound that would not heal (people said you could smell the king coming). Something to think about. youtu.be/KrpTSIMA7wM
