A witness, Michael Wohler, told police he grabbed the big dog when he heard all the yelling. He did not believe the pit bull was harming Emorys dog and that it was not necessary for him to stab it. Another witness told police she saw Emory swinging the knife wildly at the pit bull and was not necessary for him to be stabbing it. So the whole time that was going on, the guy is screaming effing pit bull this, effing pit bull that, I hate these dogs. I dont know why they are even allowed around anymore, Wohler told CBS46 Atlanta. Wohler said Hayes even stabbed Clara once after the dogs were pulled apart. The manager for PetsMart said they have items for incidents like this, when a dog attacks another. He told police they were in the process of getting a couple of items like spray and a sound device. The manager said before they could, Emory already had stabbed the dog. The pitbull, Clara, received extensive injuries, according to the Humane Society. They said they had to euthanize Clara because they did not want her to suffer anymore. The Humane Society posted this on their Adoption Page: There was a horrific, tragic incident yesterday at PetSmart with one of our foster dogs, Clara. Below is a message from one of our volunteers that was there yesterday and deeply cared for Clara, regarding the painful decision to euthanize Clara...NCHS made the very difficult decision to have Clara euthanized because we thought it would be best for Clara. Her injuries were more extensive than the vet originally thought. We did not want her to suffer anymore and ultimately die in the presence of strangers. Several of the volunteers with NCHS who know and love Clara were there with her when she passed including one of the guys who works at the kennel where she had been boarded. She was surrounded by love and no longer is in pain or suffering. We did what we thought was best for Clara under the circumstances - not because she was a liability or the cost of treatment. The little dog she attacked was injured - a bite on the neck and needed to be transported to Urgent Care for further treatment and I hear she is going to be okay. Believe me, none of us wanted to euthanize Clara - we love her - we did what we thought was best for her under the circumstances. Emory told police he was defending his dog like he would his child if a dog attacked him but also afraid the pit bull would turn and attack him and his son. Police said they are conducting a follow-up investigation and charges will depend on the outcome of the investigation, CBS46 reports.
