A wonderful, very kind message from one of our members, Jammil (Islamic Society President). Thank you so much for your kind words. -University of Lincoln Students Union, I start this letter by congratulating the whole team for winning the National Union of Students Award for Students’ Union of the year. I’m writing this letter to express just how much the Students’ Union has, in my opinion, contributed to the student experience. Over the year, the staff at the Students’ Union have provided for the students, like myself: an environment which fosters a freedom of initiative; support that is delivered on demand and lastly a recognition towards genuine efforts made by students. These efforts, it seems, perpetuate the sustained success I’ve witnessed. I must admit, when arriving at University, I held very obtuse views in regards to what the Students’ Union could offer me. My initial experience with them was memorable – I’d ordered pizzas for a society event; spent personal funds; without filling in any of the paperwork or securing a receipt - and could have deterred me from ever volunteering again. However, the matter was dealt with understanding and support. These attributes on part of the staff have developed within me an attitude I didn’t have before – I truly believe anything is possible. I don’t mean to be gratuitous or sappy. I’m not writing these words in a spirit of self-congratulation. On the contrary, I think the future is filled with reserves of opportunity waiting to be explored. I always knew much of what I was to do was volunteered work, none of the Committee I worked with expected more than a slap on the back for our efforts. We worked hard to promote what we loved. We also knew that we might have to go through some demanding periods but figured with the support of each other, we could have a chuckle through it. I don’t want to reiterate what has been said by many before me in regards to the staff at the SU – they’re fantastic and they know it. From first-hand experience, we, the Committee, were overwhelmed with the, unexpected interest, helpful advice and motivating appraisal we received. So, why is the future a reserve of opportunity? Because for the very first time in quite a while I have realised you don’t need a stockpile of wealth, a doctorate to your name (although, that would be nice!) or the support of a lobby to make a difference: its attitude that drives towards change. The money, the letters after your name, your acquaintances don’t make the difference, you do. There are no short-cuts. The University of Lincoln Students’ Union staff, have - by winning the National Union of Students Award for HE Students’ Union of the Year – proved, by example, that being dedicated to your work, by giving everything of yourself, and protecting the principles of representation, participation and inspiration that you believe in, is enough to be recognised for the difference you make. This isn’t just a matter of a providing students’ with a social life: it’s about providing them with a voice. And. That’s the truth. -Jammil Ahmed University of Lincoln Students’ Union Islamic Society Once again, thanks Jammil, and thank you to everyone whos been incredibly complimentary and positive.
