A year ago this week, I was cleaning my parents home, preparing for my mom to leave her home to be hospitalized as she faced progressive paralysis and hospitalization due to cancer and tumors on her spine. As I was cleaning the house and assisting my mom as more and more everyday tasks became impossible, I just kept repeating to myself, Just keep going...just keep going...no matter how bad it gets...just give her some dignity in this... The possibilities of what she was about to endure were just about unimaginable, and the only thing that kept me pressing on was to find any bit of dignity in whatever was left. This word will always represent that week of our lives for me, and now I think of it when I see anyone who struggles physically or personally...How can we manage to offer dignity to those in need? Im happy to say that it has been one year, and although my parents did have to move our of their home and here to Bloomington, my mom is plugging away. She is walking again, driving, and even going to the fabric store for her next project. Next month she will stay with our kids while I go to another willPower Method® training to build up some willPower of my own. We arent sure what the future holds, but I can tell you, whatever it is, she can be proud that she held on and fought through this moment. Cancer could have beaten her very quickly. No matter what happens now, she has given it a good fight, and it has not stolen her dignity.
