ABA allies! Just back from a great meeting in North London with Jolanta Lasota, CEO of the UKs other national autism charity Ambitious about Autism, plus their lead BCBA Katy Lee and public affairs guru Claire Bull. I put your comments to them and got good replies in a full and frank discussion. They are very much pro ABA, of course, but think its important that ABA works as part of a team of professionals - all of whom bring something slightly different to the party, eg SALT, OT, qualified class teachers. But ABA should definitely have an equal seat at the table in their view, and they are all about the evidence base. In fact the list of what they have done for ABA in this country rather puts everyone else to shame: opening Treehouse, the first ever UK ABA school, now with 85 pupils in the amazing Pears Centre - with 13 BCBAs and even a dentist on site, plus a mini office and shop to teach the kids work skills; achieving a massive lobbying victory and securing rights to education for autistic children right through from ages 0-25; opening the first autism post-school college, Ambitious College, on PBS/ABA lines; opening the first free school for children with hf autism using ABA, the Rise; co-funding the creation of the UKSBA (UK Society for Behaviour Analysis); funding the ABA Competencies project; umpteen school staff and parents benefiting from their ABA training courses; funding important UK ABA research - the list goes on. One of their next strategic targets is sorting out early autism intervention. Much needed. We will be exploring if there could be any common ground or if they could help our ABA4All campaigning.
